Brand Perception min

Brand in One Word

Perception

Let’s get right to it. Your “BRAND” is literally how other people perceive your business. And in the world of economics, the perception others hold on a business becomes that businesses’ reality of success or failure.

Consider a few of your favorite companies. In our home, Under Armour comes to mind. What makes that brand special? That depends on which consumer you ask. My husband says, “Quality.” For me, it’s consistency. I know if I purchase my husband a shirt, he will wear a medium- every time. I don’t look at the chart, no running to check his wardrobe. Medium….. EVERY TIME!

Since he likes the quality, I know I’m safe to purchase this brand and I won’t need to return it because it always fits and, at minimum, he feels it is worth what I pay. This makes UA a top brand in our home. He’s also an avid golfer who is loyal to Taylor Made. Due to his extreme fidelity surrounding the brand, I never considered Callaway or any other brand when I purchased his new set of irons, driver, 3-wood, or bag. (Each separate purchases, by the way-meaning, I chose the Taylor Made brand on 4 separate occassions.)  His devotion to his brands makes him easy to shop for. The cost of his “devotion” however, not as easy on my pocketbook!

What is Branding?

Back in the western days, before the type of branding mentioned here, a rancher would mark his property with a branding iron. He wanted everyone to know, “This belongs to my ranch. Seeing this brand proves my ownership.” A brand was a form of identification. In today’s time, we have chips embedded in our dogs and enable facial recognition on our phones to prove ownership. But is any of this that different than branding a business?

well, yes...

and no.....

Branding is merely all the actions, (or steps) taken to secure who, or what, a business is. The visual aspect usually begin with colors, fonts, and possibly an icon, designed on a logo. This provides recognition to the name. This sector is akin to the old branding iron from long ago. But what about beyond the colors and schemes?

Today’s Branding moves beyond “just recognition” and encompasses an entire process to influence consumers. Branding draws attention for comsumenrs to purchase services or products and to then, remain loyal to these products and services. A “Brand” is the impression a business leaves on the consumer, while “Branding” is how these footprints are bestowed.

Emotions hacky sacs min

Where a good brand will convey Visual Recognition as in logos, colors, and fonts, an excellent Brand will develop an Emotional Connection between the company and its consumers.

Not convinced? Put it to the test. Consider your favorite Brands. Why do you like them? Are they consistent in quality, structure, design? Can you rely on them when they come out with a new line of products. What is their pattern?

[ What emotions do you feel with certain brands?]

When you think of your favorite store or restaurant, why do you enjoy them? Is it their dedication of service? Quality of their products? Is it the way they package a product? What initially drew them to you? And, why do you keep going back? (Or, in some cases, not go back?)

These are all aspects of BRANDING.

Visual Branding

A Logo is only a start to branding!

Do you recognize any of these Brands original logos?

Google

Google has branded themselves with being one of the best places to work…. ever! They offer free food, a gym for working out, and even an adult playground to relive stress. That is part of their brand. And it must be working because over 63% of people reading this now probably found their way here via google. Oh, and you can even bring your pet to work! Who can beat that?

The Famous SIREN

Starbucks

Starbucks is often thrust into the limelight as being aversive to the United States military. Sadly, as with many things we may read on the internet, most of this holds little to no truth. However, the reality of this controversy has become part of their brand for many consumers. Read this article  to understand, often times, the truth does not matter where controversy is concerned. Consumers’ perception can easily become a Brand’s reality and identity.

Amazon

Did you know Amazon started in the garage of a man named Jeff Bezos as an online book selling business? Amazon founder recently cashed out on $8.5 billion from his Amazon shares, now owning under 10% of Amazon. In an interview on CNBC, Bezos explained how his business model has always been “it’s obsessive attention to the customer experience.” He’s not wrong.

McDonald's

Guess what the largest franchise is in the world. Are you lovin’ it yet? While the arches are known aorund the world, what makes McDonalds so special in over 100 countries?  Their menu is not the same everywhere. While you can get a Big Mac and other “staples” in every country, McDonald’s bases their menu on culture and the desires of their surroundings. Does your McDonald’s have biscuits and gravy?
